You Can Still Be Lazy And Lose Weight

I'm the type of person that when I'm at the gym I work my tail off. For the hour that I'm there I will lift weights for thirty minutes and then hop on the treadmill or elliptical machine for another thirty minutes. While I am at the gym my sole purpose is to work out. I try to avoid conversations with people so I can stay focused. But when I am at the mall or at home, you better believe I'm the person who is taking the elevator or sitting on the couch using the remote - trying everything I can NOT to get off the couch.
Why am I telling you this, because I would consider myself a pretty lazy person. But am I overweight? No. Have I ever been? Absolutely!
I'll be the first one to tell you that my house is usually a complete mess. That goes the same for my car, my closets and my refrigerator. The thing that I prioritize and put all my effort into is getting my lazy tail to the gym. Once I'm there I'm usually good to go. I have to admit, so much of it is a mind game. If I am feeling especially lazy I will put on my gym clothes and just tell myself that I will hop on the treadmill for five minutes and "just watch tv". Usually that is enough to motivate me. And then if I want to do more I do more. If not, then I'm done. The bottom line is that you have to get yourself used to getting to the gym as much as possible. If you have this image of yourself sweating, bent over in pain from working out too hard, you're never going to set foot in a gym. Next time you're contemplating that decision just tell yourself, I'm just going to go drink some coffee and watch a little tv (at 2.5 miles per hour). Again, it's all mental.
So let go of that excuse that if you are lazy you can never be thin. It's a total myth and I'm proof that it is totally possible. After my last pregnancy I was about forty pounds overweight. My refrigerator was packed with convenience foods because like I said, I'm pretty lazy and am okay with popping something in the microwave. I had things that were very easy to snack on like chips, sweets, baked goods, and ice cream. There is nothing tastier than a Costco-sized blueberry muffin with a big cup of coffee - Delicious!
So how can someone so lazy lose weight? Here's my secret.
Every week I eliminated an unhealthy food from my diet. One week it was pop, the next it was mayonnaise. For foods that were really hard to let go of, I did it gradually. With dessert for example, instead of having it every night, I would only have it 5 nights a week, then 3. You get the idea. This strategy worked for me because it meant that I was taking baby steps.
There is no doubt you will lose weight this way. If you want to continue losing weight you need to keep giving something up each week. And remember the gym plan too. You can't forget your exercise. Every time you lose weight look in the mirror and reevaluate yourself, If you want to lose more then keep going. If you're satisfied with where you are then stop. If you hit a plateau then you have to kick it up a couple of notches.
Another key element to losing weight is getting enough sleep. I'm telling you right now If you are getting less than six hours of sleep a night you are setting yourself up for failure. It becomes a vicious cycle.
Here's what happens to me when I don't get enough sleep:
I wake up tired and irritable. Too lazy to make breakfast. Will just drink coffee
3 hours later will be famished and will only want something like a danish
After the sugar rush and then the low I will want something else to pick me up which is usually another unhealthy option
By the time I get home I'm too exhausted to work out
I pass out on the couch and wake up at 9pm
Wake up starving so I pop in a microwave dinner
Start watching tv and before I know it, it's midnight and I'm still not tired because of my previous nap
Go to bed at 2am and do it all over again because I have to be up at 7am
Do you see my point? So believe me when I tell you that 8-9 hours of sleep a night is a total must. And if you're lazy like me, then you should welcome that idea with open arms. Skip your late night tv watching and get into bed. If watching "Dancing with the Stars" is more important then you becoming thin so be it. But when I had weight to lose, I said goodbye to late night television and hello to my pillow.
The key to weight loss success doesn't mean that you have to totally revamp your life and "take the stairs" every time you are out and about. It's about getting a little bit of exercise in that includes weight training and about cleaning up your refrigerator and pantry. That and a lot of sleep will get you started on your journey to losing weight. Remember it's all about baby steps. That way it takes practically no effort at all!
